One of the saddest events occurred last week when Gladys, the twenty-year old daughter of Mrs. Ora Downing passed away suddenly at a hospital in Syracuse where she had been a patient for three or four days with peritonitis. Her condition was not considered serious until about an hour before she died and her folks were immediately summoned. Her sister Alice and brother Howard, who were in Syracuse, reached her bedside, but her mother and brother Lowell were at the Richville depot ready to start for Syracuse when the sad news came over the wire that Gladys was dead. It was a terrible shock to the relatives and friends and the mother was prostrate with grief. The young girl's body was brought here on the midnight train Thursday, accompanied as far as Gouverneur by her aunt, Mrs. Dayman, with whom Gladys had been making her home while in Syracuse. Gladys was a bright and ambitious girl and was a graduate from the Gouverneur High School and the Central City Business College at Syracuse. She was employed by an insurance company as a bookkeeper and stenographer. She had been poorly for the past two years but persistently kept at her work. The funeral service was held from the Richville Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Bennetts officiating. The large attendance and profusion of flowers were only a silent token of respect for the dead and the heartfelt sympathy for those who are left to mourn. She is survived by her mother, a sister, Alice; two brothers, Lowell and Howard. A young brother, Garth, died several years ago, and her father, the late Howard Downing died shortly before her birth. Gladys was buried in Wayside Cemetery.
