Papaw had all of the Rich's qualities. He loved his family, was ready to help anyone, had a smile for everyone, and was a friend to many.

The way his life ended would leave
our family heart broken.

Papaw and Mamaw's house was a place we loved to visit. We would all gather there for family dinners. I have so many happy memories of those times. Papaw farmed corn, had cows, mules, pigs and chickens. He always had a big vegetable garden and grew watermelons to sell. He was a hard worker, but I never heard him complain.

Papaw's father died when he was a teenager, so he took over helping his mother farm the land. My brother
tells a story about one time when Papaw had stayed out late one night. The next morning he was in the field and
decided to take a nap under a big shade tree. The mules wandered into the corn field and started to eat the corn. He woke up and saw what had happened. He let the cows into the field and told his Mother he had found them there. He told my brother that was the only lie he ever
told his Mother.

He always had fox dogs and loved
them. I can remember lots of summer
nights sitting on the front porch with him, listening to the dogs when he would let them out to run.

My sister Barbara and I spent lots
of nights with them. We would climb
into the feather bed and fall asleep
listening to the ticking of the Mantle Clocks. I have never felt as safe or more loved as I did then.

Every holiday was spent at our Grand-
Parents house. My favorite was the 4th
of July because there was always lots of family. Mamaw would have many good things to eat. Papaw would fill a tub with ice and all kinds of drinks. Later in the day there would be homemade ice cream. It was a day Papaw always
celebrated in honor of all of the ones who fought for our country; including some of ours as far back as the Revolutionary War.

My Grandmother Bessie died when I was 15 years old. She had a heart attack and Papaw found her on the kitchen floor. The Heart of our Family was gone and
we all felt the loss. She died in
February, 1962. Papaw lived there
almost 5 years until he suffered a
stroke and had to live with his
children. He stayed with Daddy for
a few weeks and then he would go and
stay at his Daughter's home for awhile.

Papaw was a proud man. He didn't like
having to rely on others for help. The
stroke affected his speech and he would
get aggravated when we couldn't under-
stand him.

On a cold February day Papaw walked
through the pasture past the little
house we grew up in to a pond at the
back of the property that belonged to his
sister Sallie. He tied a rope around his
waist with a concrete block and walked
into the water. They searched for him for hours.Neighbors from all around came to help. A neighbor, Luther Red, spotted Papaw's felt hat floating on the top of
the water. That is where they found him.

His funeral is a blur to me. I do
remember there were so many people
there and lots of beautiful flowers.
A Loving Tribute to a Wonderful Man.
Years later I took Daddy to get
a haircut, and the man in the barber
shop asked if we thought you would go
to Heaven if you took your own life.
Daddy sat there and couldn't say a word.
I said I felt that they would because
we had that happen in our own family.

I Truly Believe When I Leave This World
My Papaw And All Of My Family Will Be
Waiting For Me In Heaven.

I Love You Papaw- Your Granddaughter !!
