Stephen Joseph Hahn, 62, beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered Heaven’s Gates on Thursday, February 16, 2006. Stephen passed away as a result of an automobile accident while on the job as a deputy for the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department.

Plombon Funeral Home in Stanley is assisting the family.

Stephen was born on August 2, 1943, in Chicago, Ill., to Joseph and Jean (Hera) Hahn. The family later moved to Boyd, Wis., where they farmed. Stephen graduated from Stanley-Boyd High School in 1962.

Upon graduation, he entered the Army and was a military police officer and dog trainer. In 1966, he joined the Eau Claire Police Department, starting in animal control, and was then promoted to patrol officer, sergeant and lieutenant, finally ending his career as captain of administrative services. While he was working for the police department, he earned his degree at UW-Eau Claire and also graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. Stephen loved his job as a police officer and was a dedicated servant to his city and county. He retired from the department in 1997. His drive to help his community was never ending, though; and upon retirement, he took a job with the Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department as a transport officer and became a deputy.

Stephen was an avid sportsman and enjoyed his yearly trips to Canada and hunting season with his friends. Many times during the winter months you could find him sitting on a bucket ice fishing on Half Moon Lake. He spent his summer months watching his grandsons Adam and Austin playing baseball, and Tyler riding his bike up and down the driveway. He was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his twin granddaughters this spring. He enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy; son, Jeff (Carol) Giedd; and daughter, Stefanie (Chris) Thompson. He is also survived by his three grandsons Adam, Austin and Tyler; and twin granddaughters due this spring. He is further survived by his aunt, Helen Marion; uncle, John (Elaine) Kosakoski; in-laws, Lloyd and Orleen Smith; many cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph, in November of 1992; and mother, Jean, in September of 2005.

Visitation and services will be at the Tabernacle of Praise, 3445 Gateway Drive, Eau Claire, Wis., officiated by Pastor Terry Matlock. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 19. Viewing will also be available one hour prior to the funeral. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, with burial to follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire.
