Elmer Sundby was the Chief of Police in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He served 12 years for the Police Force, dying in the line of duty at age 48. A suspect had just robbed a Power Company of Trolley Car Receipts and fled towards a wooded area on foot. The Robbery Suspect fled to the bank of the Chippewa River. Chief Sundby, his Officers and a group of Citizens began to search the area. Chief Sundby located the suspect and confronted him. There was a shootout, where Chief Sundby was shot twice. The suspect escaped by swimming across the river, and was never apprehended.
