Casey Ross Cornelius, 47, went to be with the Lord February 11, 2006, at his home in Springfield, Mo., after a heroic battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease. Casey brought joy and laughter to all those he met through his work with the community and as a Police Officer with the Springfield Police Department. Casey was born in Smithville, Mo., attended college at School of the Ozarks and resided in Springfield, Mo., until his death.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; faithful canine companion, Lucy; daughter, Erin Smalley and her husband, Justin; son, Ross Cornelius; father, Bud Cornelius and his wife, Beverly; mother, Lois Cornelius; sister, Randy McDonnell and her husband, Dean; brother, Cary Cornelius and his wife, Tammara; brother, Kelly Cornelius and his wife, Mary. He leaves behind two lights in his life, his grandchildren Alexandra and Lucas Smalley.

Casey touched many lives through his battle with disease by his courage, strength, and sense of humor. His fight will not be forgotten by those who encountered his big heart and passion to live to the fullest. He is our hero.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 15, at 10:30 a.m. in Walnut Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Cops for Casey, Inc., at Metro Credit Union in Springfield, Mo., or the ALS Association-Keith Worthington Chapter. Friends condolences may be expressed here.
