Gilbert was the founder of the Society of History and Genealogy of Farnham.
He was an active volunteer in his community as well as a reservist in the Canadian Forces.
Last October, Gilbert was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the Town of Farnham.
At the time of his death he was working on the preparations for the Heritage Day 2014 celebrations for Farnham.
Gilbert is survived by two sons, grandchildren and a great grandchild, and his girlfriend Yvonne, as well as a large extended family.
