ANOTHER VETERAN GONE
William Chaffin died here Yesterday Morning
Was a soldier of the great conflict. Funeral will be at 9:30 this morning.
At 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning William Chaffin, a Confederate Veteran, answered the roll call on the other side of the river and joined the host of Lee and Jackson who preceded him.
Mr. Chaffin was 79 years old and was born in Tennessee. When three years old his parents came to Texas when it was still under Mexican rule. In 1859 he married Miss Virgie Millsap, of Georgia, and to them were born four children, three of whom are still living; Mrs. Giles, Commerce; Mrs. A. F. Richter of this city; Ben Chaffin of Kansas City, Mo. For several years Mr. Chaffin made his home with Mrs. Richter.
When the Civil War broke out he entered the Confederate Army and served during the war with gallantry and bravery, and at its close returned to this city where he has been a successful business man. He was noted for his industry and honesty and was a loyal and upright citizen. His judgement in business affairs was good and his advise was sought by those who knew him best. In his death Greenville loses another of the grand old heroes who fought for the South and are dropping by the wayside.
The funeral will be at 9:30 o'clock this morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Richter conducted by presiding Elder R. G. Mood, and the burial will be in a cemetery near Campbell.
His son, Ben Chaffin, will not be able to reach here until late Wednesday Morning, but Mr. and Mrs, Giles and Mrs. James Wallace, a sister, of of Lone Oak, are here, and two granddaughters, Mrs. George Sayers, of Commerce, Miss Via Chaffin, of Chillecothe, Mo. will arrive this morning.
The family and large circle of relatives have sincere sympathy of the whole community in the loss of this Brave veteran and good Man.
