Greenville Herald-Banner -- December 10, 2007 -- M.B. "Humpy" Chaffin, 83 of Campbell passed away the morning of December 8 at his home surrounded by family and friends. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 11 at Peters Funeral Home chapel with Rev. James Rolson and sons Isaac and Benny Chaffin officiating. Burial will be at Sullivan Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening 6 to 8 at the funeral home. "Humpy" as he is known to family and friends was born to parents Marvin and Maude E. (King) Chaffin on April 1, 1924 in Campbell. He married Dorthia Fitzgerald September 7, 1942 in Cumby and were lovingly devoted to each other for 65 years; as well he was a loving and devoted dad. "Humpy" believed in God, family and country. He served in the army during World War II as a sergeant. After retiring from E-Systems in 1984, he was able to devote himself to what he enjoyed doing the most – farming and ranching. He was a member of the Campbell School Board for many years. "Humpy" was ordained in 1988 as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Campbell where he served for 19 years. He and his wife later became members of Shady Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Dorthia; a daughter Elwanda Blue; two sons – Benny Chaffin and wife Suzan, and Isaac Chaffin and wife Crystal, all of Campbell; a brother J.B. Chaffin of Greenville; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, whom he was very proud of; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Opal Garren and Olene Moore, one brother Felt Chaffin and a granddaughter Rachel Nicole Chaffin, and a son-in-law James D. Blue. Pallbearers will be Frankie Morris, Don Etheridge, Tom Green, Dennis Dawson, David Digs, and Mark Crouch. J.E. Burkett, Bob Foster, Bill Jilian, Wayne Billington, L.D. Harris, and Cletis Earl will serve as honorary pallbearers.
