When Dwight arrived in Vietnam 22 January 1968, he was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.
The battalion was participating in Operation Mameluke Thrust with Echo Company operating about 1 kilometer south of the Liberty Bridge. While on a patrol Dwight detonated a hostile boobytrap mine, at approximately 0930H and was med-evac to the Station Hospital NSA in Danang, where he died at approximately 1240H, as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body from the boobytrap explosion.
Survived by his parents, Jack S and Jonnie Howell and his sister; Julie Howell all of Lake Road, Seymour, Texas.
His younger brother, James K Howell died in 1967.
