Charles Brown was one of four Coffeyville residents who were killed defending the town for the Dalton Raid on October 5, 1892. The Daltons wanted to rob two banks at the same time, but the townsfolk recognized them and gathered guns while the outlaws were delayed inside the two banks. During the gunfight as the Dalton Gang tried to get away, Charles Brown, George Cubine, Charles Connelly, and Lucius Baldwin were killed. The Daltons fared no better, their leader, Robert "Bob" Dalton was killed, along with his brother Grat Dalton and gangmembers Bill Power and Dick Broadwell. Emmett was severely wounded and arrested. The Coffeyville raid proved to be the end of the Dalton Gang's outlaw career
