He worked at the First National Bank in Powell, and died when the bank was being robbed by Walter Earl Durand. Durand used him for a human shield, and he was shot as they stepped out of the bank.

After all the shooting, and Durand was wounded and then took his own life, Gawthrop was laying barely alive on the sidewalk. The Tribune reports he said "I'm glad it was me, and not one of the married men." He was rushed to the Powell hospital, but he died before they arrived.
