Ernestine Stella Schuhmann Rainey, our sweet mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known as "Midge," passed peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of February 19, 2010, at Hospice Austin's Christopher House. Midge was born to Ewald W. Schuhmann and Nelle Houston Schuhmann on September 2, 1927, in El Paso, Texas.

She is survived by daughter Anne, son Richard, grandchildren John, Claire, and Catherine, and her precious great-grandson Otto. She is also survived by son-in-law Tom, grandchildren-in-law Yamin, Kris and Erik, former son-in-law Carl, and step-grandchildren Abigail and Anna, as well as nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Richard.

For many years, Midge was active in local Democratic politics and Gray Panthers of Austin. We will miss her sense of humor, her intelligence, her politics, her warmth, wit, love and understanding, and her hilarious poetry.
