George W. Carpenter was born in the Fairmount section(2108 Fairmount ave.) or now known as the Art Museum area of Philadelphia. His mother was Mary Pembroke, who immigrated from County Kilkenny, Ireland. His father was Philadelphia native and Civil War Veteran, William Henry Carpenter. His siblings incuded Mary (McCready), Jennie (Gibbs), William John(Ellen Brady), and Maggie,Rachel (Gransfield).
On December 23, 1898, at the age of 21, George enlisted in the Army and served in the Spanish American War in the Phillipines. On December 23, 1901, he was honorably discharged with the status of "excellent".
He married Ethel Booz somewhere around 1909 in Bristol,Pa,. In 1910 George and his family were living with his widowed father, William, on Keystone Street in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. George and Ethel had three children: William Henry, Ervin and Hazel.
George worked as a machinist in a saw mill in Tacony. His sons, William and Ervin lived in the Tacony section of Philadelphia all of their lives. A recreation center in Tacony is named for the grandson of George Carpenter, William H. Carpenter, Jr., who was killed in Vietnam in 1967. George and Ethel are buried at Magnolia Cemetery.
George's son William H. Carpenter is buried at St. Dominic's with his wife, Alfreda Grablewski, and their son William H. Carpenter, Jr. His son, Ervin, is also buried at St. Dominic's with his wife, Monica----.also his daughter Hazel Carpenter(Nicoletti)is at St.Dominic's cemetery.
