How can I describe the man I called Daddy for nearly 45 years? He was the son of the late Louis W. Vennell Sr. and Annamae Vivian Frye- Vennell. Daddy was born at home on 600 block of Bailey Street in what is now North Camden, N.J. He was the 5th born child and firstborn son out of nine children total. He was of the Baptist faith and believed in God wholeheartedly.
Daddy's parents separated in 1947 but never divorced. He was raised single handedly by Granny after that with the rest of his siblings. They lived on Lakedale Road for many years in the Winslow section of Camden County for many years and moved here and there for many years after. He had a rough life growing up I'm sure but once us kids were born, I know we had it just a little better than he did growing up.
Daddy was married once before he married Mommy. Her name was Ramona and she was from Belton Texas.I don't know much else about her. He married Mommy on July 3, 1963 and together they had four children. Myself, Louis Warrick Vennell III(of Clearwater, Florida) my brother Michael Lee Vennell of Atco, N.J,. My sister Tina Wheeler of Florida and my brother Kenneth Daniel Vennell of Williamstown, N.J.
Mommy and Daddy separated in 1973 and finally divorced in 1978. He remained single for the remainder of his life.
Daddy loved CB radio and his handle was Hillbilly and his call letters were KDN-6892 if memory serves me correctly. He loved all sports, especially baseball, football and wrestling.
He worked as a laborer all of his life. First at Formigli Corp. and for many years up to his retirement at Atlas Building Corp. in Voorhees where they manufactured concrete slabs.
Daddy was also a veteran of the US Army. He attended basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. and also was at Ft. Hood, Texas and I believe Ft. Gordon, Georgia. He got the chance to travel to Alaska and Germany. Daddy entered the service at the age of 18 in 1954 and I believe he served 3 years before being honorably discharged.
My Daddy was always a humble man. We may not have always gotten along but as a grown up adult, he and I made peace with each other and we loved each other very much. Distance separated us the last years of his life. I was last able to see Daddy in January 2007 when I traveled to N.J. but we spoke as often as we could by phone. We never ended a conversation without saying I love you and I did.
I know he is not suffering anymore and is free from the pain caused by Parkinsons Disease and C.O.P.D. as well as diabetes which I also suffer from.
Daddy is survived by us four kids listed above as well as his sisters Maragret V. Bair of Tansboro, N.J., Louise Barth of Camden, N.J.,Katherine Bakley of Salisbury, Md.(deceased3-17-2011), Mabel Uron of Barrington, N.J. and Alvin Vennell of Mission, Texas(deceased 10-2010). He was predeceased by his Mom and Dad as well as his oldest sister Annamae who died at 5 months of age from pneumonia, his sister Jean Doris Vennell-Maurone of Delran, N.J., and his youngest brother Edgar Davis Vennell who lived in California at the time of his passing.He is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Michael Lamoureaux of Wildwood, Missouri, Nicole Lynn Vennell and Lisa and Amanda Vennell of N.J., Stephen Dominic Acheson of N.J., Jennifer Lynn Johnson of Mountain View, Arkansas,Jim Brian Attig Jr. of Minonk, Illinois and Daniel and Kylie Vennell of Williamstown, N.J. He was also survived by 3 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Life Lessons

You may have thought I didn't see,
Or that I hadn't heard,
Life lessons that you taught to me,
But I got every word.

Perhaps you thought I missed it all,
And that we'd grow apart,
But Dad, I picked up everything,
It's written on my heart.

Without you, Dad, I wouldn't be
The (woman)(man) I am today;
You built a strong foundation
No one can take away.

I've grown up with your values,
And I'm very glad I did;
So here's to you, dear father,
From your forever grateful kid.

Hero Dad

You are my hero, Dad
You're my secure foundation.
When I think of you, I'm filled with love
And fond appreciation.

You make me feel protected;
I'm sheltered by your care.
You're always my true friend; and Dad,
When I need you, you're always there.

You have a place of honor
Deep within my heart.
You've been my superhero, Dad,
Right from the very start.

I'll see you in heaven again one day Daddy, where we'll both be whole and healthy again. Until then, watch for me at the Gate with Mommy and Granny and everybody else. I love you and will always miss you very much. I am proud to be your son and bear your name.
