Convicted Mass Murderer. On the evening of July 13, 1966 in Chicago, Illinois, he was armed with a gun and a knife when he cut his way though a screened kitchen door and entered a nurses' residence. Speck was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs when the crime spree began as a routine burglary. He methodically killed and raped over the next several hours eight of the nurses, who ranged in age from 20 to 23 years old. Speck had a tattoo "Born To Raise Hell" on his arm, and he was known by that trademark. He was sentenced to death in Illinois, but the conviction was overturned in 1973 by the U.S. Supreme Court to 300 years of maximum security. He spent the last quarter century of his life in a maximum security prison in Joliet, Illinois, and died of a heart attack on the day before his fiftieth birthday.
