Alexander was the son of George and Cynthia Adam. Siblings included John, Mary, Joseph, Matilda, Harriett, James, and Virginia. During the Civil War Alexander was a Private with the 12th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry. Following the war Alexander moved back home, became a farmer, and married Unknown Ashby. However, she died soon after giving birth to their son Henry in 1868. Alexander married Mary Martin January 17, 1871 in Chariton County, Missouri. Known children born to them were Loula, Willie, Caleb, Homer, Alexander, Frank, Fred, Ollie, George, and Grace.
