Carl Altman, 28, 240 Strodham
avenue, died at 4:30 Sunday afternoon
at Riverview hospital of injuries
suffered early Friday morning
when struck by a car while
making his rounds as wood yard
watchman for the Consolidated Water
Power and Paper company...
Altman... was walking
south on the east side of Fourth
avenue north near a log pile about
1:35 Friday morning when the
[vehicle], also headed
south, approached from the rear.
According to Chief of Police R. J.
Exner, who instituted proceedings
against [the driver], the car was on
the left side of the road and there
were skid marks a distance of 175
feet.
[The driver] admitted in a statement
to police that he had crossed
to the wrong side of the road and
that the right headlight on his car
was out. He said he did not see
Altman until it was too late to
avoid striking him. He stopped and
gave aid to Altman...
Altman was born Feb. 25, 1916,
at Blenker and attended St. Kilian
Catholic school there. He was married
May 3, 1938, to Marion Rank.
Besides the widow, survivors are
a son, Ronald, at home; his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Altman,
Blenker; three brothers, Sgt. Edgar
Altman, Wilmington (Del.) air
base; Pfc. Raymond Altman, somewhere
in Belgium, and Richard, at
home.
The body is at Rembs Funeral
home, Marshfield.
