Scottye Bright Powers passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010, just shy of her 103rd birthday.

She was born in Marion County, Kentucky, on April 30, 1907, to William David Bright and Patsy Catherine Tungate Bright. Her mother died not long thereafter, and her father married Sarah McNear. Scottye had three half-brothers—William, Moses, and Wilbert--and two half-sisters—Mamie and Bessie--from her father's second marriage.

Scottye left Kentucky for New York City in the 1940s and got a job at Macy's department store. She walked in one of the first Macy's Thanksgiving Day parades dressed as a clown. Returning to Kentucky, she met Francis LeRoy Powers in Louisville, and they were married in 1948. They had no children together, but Roy Powers was the father of two sons, Charles and Max. Charles and his wife Mary had six children—Charles Jr., Betty, Tom, Pamela, William, and Peggy—and Max and his wife Vivian had two daughters, Joanne and Laurel. There are 14 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Roy and Scottye Powers moved from Borden, Indiana, to Hempstead, Texas, in 1968, where Roy died that year. Scottye continued to live in Hempstead until 1987, where she was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Hempstead, volunteering in the kitchen and organizing the luncheon gatherings at the church for the area seniors. She was particularly involved in the barbecues, which were well-attended by seniors from all over Waller County. These gatherings were famous for the domino games; Scottye was an accomplished "42" player and often won the championship. In 1987, Scottye moved with Max and Vivian Powers to Mercer Island, Washington. She pulled up stakes again in 1992, this time for El Paso, Texas, then returned to Hempstead in 1997. For the last 12 years Scottye has been living at Kruse Memorial Lutheran Village in Brenham, Texas. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Kruse Village for the quality care and attention they have provided to Scottye. We also are grateful to Scottye's many friends and neighbors, who loved her and looked out for her all these years. She will be missed by all.

A funeral service was held Friday, April 23, at First United Methodist Church, 1010 Seventh Street, Hempstead, at 11:00 am. The family held a visitation period at the church at 10:00 am.

Honorary pallbearers are Ruth Connett, Percy Mae Mills, Emeronce Kennedy, Ladine Schumacher, Vivian Killian, Evelyn Haedge, and Betty Coleman.

Following the service, Scottye was buried next to her husband Roy in Hempstead Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please kindly consider making a donation to First United Methodist Church, 1010 Seventh Street, Hempstead, Texas 77445.

Scottye lived to be 102 years, 11 months and 21 days old.
