Oregon Governor He immegrated to the United States in 1871, when his parents settled ona farm near Hillsboro, Oregon. He became a successful scientific farmer, and in 1898 was recruited by Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) to teach farmers. Withycombe served as Oregon State Governor from 1915 - 1918. He won re-election but died two months into his second term. Created the Oregon State Defense Force during WWI to protect Oregon's war industry from striking workers.
