Fred was the first black coach of a major college basketball team and the second black coach of a Division I team after Will Robinson. He was the head basketball team coach at the University of Arizona from 1972-1982. In later years he became a Baskins-Robbins Vice President and director of the Food 4 Less Foundation in Los Angeles. He was in Washington for a White House ceremony when he died. Fred had a 167-108 career record.
