Study Rare Disease Fatal To Akron Child by Helen Waterhouse

Studies are being made of the tragic case of an Akron child, whose funeral will be Monday, with hopes help may come to other children suffering from cystic fibrosis.
That is the wish of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barnes, 418 Bruner st., whose 8-year-old daughter, Alberta Ray Barnes, died Thursday in Children's Hospital. Alberta had cystic fibrosis, a disease affecting the lungs and the pancreas. "THE SPECIALIST begged us to allow an autopsy and we agreed. He wants to carry on studies. We feel if we can aid other parents of children afflicted, Alberta's death hasn't been in vain," the heartbroken mother said.

Mrs. Barnes has found that only one state-Connecticut-has an association formed for the purpose of promoting research and also to raise funds to aid parents in paying for the expensive drugs needed to prolong the lives of the little victims of cystic fibrosis. She will act as the representative of that organization here. Äs far as we know only another child here, a little boy has the disease now," said Mrs. Barnes.

Alberta never weighed more than 31 pounds, although she ate well, and at times could play like other children. FOR THE LAST few weeks she had been constantly under an oxygen tent in the hospital. Her mother seldom left her side and fed and cared for her to the end.

Mrs. Barnes; first husband died. She has two healthy children by this first marriage.
Alberta was never told her case was hopeless. But on the day of her death she whispered to her mother that she was "going to Heaven between 7:30 and 12." She died at 11 p.m". The Rev. John D. Richardson of the Four Square Gospel Church, will officiate at funeral services for the child who did not have a chance. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Eckard Funeral Home. Burial will be Glendale Cemetery.
