Sarah Jane Birely, 96, Valley View Home, died Sunday morning at the home.

She was born in Orviston, daughter of Ammon A. and Sarah M. (Emenhizer) Miller. She married the late Walter E. "Tim" Birely.

Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie S. Baumgardner of Altoona; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Margaret Birely of Altoona.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald E. Birely; a grandson, Andrew M. Baumgardner; a brother, George Miller; a sister, Catherine Desenberg; and a son-in-law, Early Baumgardner.

Sarah was a graduate of Altoona High School. She was a homemaker and a member of Wehnwood United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. She enjoyed writing poetry, sewing and traveling.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Vincent J. Good Funeral Parlor, 328 Fifth Ave., Altoona, followed by a funeral service at 8 p.m. by the Rev. Evelyn Madison. Interment will be in Blair Memorial Park.
