Joseph E. Emerson, 77, of Frederick died peacefully on June 12, 2013. He was he husband of Bernadette Olszewski Emerson, his wife of 39 years.

Born October 20, 1935 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Captain Alexander L. and Loretta Beavin Emerson.

He attended St. Charles College, Catonsville, Loyola College, Baltimore, and studied for the Catholic Priesthood a St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore, from 1957 to 1962. He received his law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1965.
Joe was an Assistant County Attorney in Montgomery County, MD, and in the private practice of law in Baltimore. From the office's start in Maryland, he served in the Public Defender's Office in Baltimore City and Howard County from 1972 through 1978. He completed his law career serving as the Deputy County Attorney in Frederick County, MD from 1979 until his retirement in 1996.
Joe had been a member of the Elks Club and was a past President and a life member of the Optimist Club of Frederick. He was a member and past President of the Saint Vincent DePaul Society, and a faithful member of St. John the Evangelist, Roman Catholic Church, Frederick, MD.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Susan E. DeWitt (Scott) of Middletown, Ellen M. Hanner (Edward) of Walkersville, and a step-daughter, Maureen D. Stills (Michael) of Ashburn, VA; grandchildren, Steven and Christopher DeWitt, Elizabeth and Emily Hanner and Sean Stills; one brother, Willard J. Emerson and wife Virginia and one sister Elizabeth A. Pivec; a sister- in-law Mariallys Cesa, Poughkeepsie, NY and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe will also be remembered by his devoted friends: Herb Ramsburg and Sue, Rose and Arlan Blyler and Jane and Tony Martin.

Friends will be received from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 16th at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street, Frederick, MD.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 E. Second Street, Frederick, MD on Monday, June 17th at 11 a.m. Rev. J. Kevin Farmer will officiate. The interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Catholic Education, 53 E. Patrick St., Frederick, MD 21701, St. Vincent De Paul Society, 112 E. Second St., Frederick, MD 21701 or Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD 21702.
