Mr. Joseph Carroll

Mr. Joseph Francis Carroll, 80, of Frederick, MD, previously of Myersville, was welcomed into the loving arms of his beloved Lord Jesus on June 6, 2007. He was the devoted husband of Kathryn E. Boyer Carroll, his wife of 58 years.
Born Sept. 7, 1926 in Baltimore, MD, he lived many years in Elvaton.

He was the son of the late Myrtle Frantum Carroll Cochran and Joseph Francis Carroll Sr., and the stepson of the late Victor Cochran. He was the adored father of two daughters, the recently deceased Nancy G. Mason, and Wendy Skarda, of Frederick. He will also be remembered by a loyal foster daughter, Laura Ann Fogle of Frederick and many other foster children. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Donald E. Mason Jr., Edward C. Skarda Jr.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Mason, Kristen Skarda Smith, CPT Bryan Skarda, USAF, 2LT Michael Skarda, USAF; several foster grandchildren and especially beloved twin granddaughters, Julie E. and Jennie L. Skarda, who shared his life and home with him; his sisters, Edna Schools of Elvaton, Irma Vajaranant of Chicago, and a brother, Charles Cochran and wife Debbie of Florida and many other friends and relatives, including his beloved great-niece, Donna Boyer Gravett.

In addition to his daughter, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis Carroll, and a sister, Marian Ruesing. He will also be greatly missed by his furry friend, Dolly.

Joe attended school in Baltimore, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations on a destroyer, the USS Bordelon (DD 881), and earned the American Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, and the Pacific Theater Ribbon. He witnessed the signing of the unconditional surrender documents by the Japanese delegation aboard the USS Missouri.

Mr. Carroll worked as a machinist for J.M. Bucheimer Co. for 27 years, and he worked for 16 years at Honda of Hagerstown. He retired from Myersville McDonalds in 1998.

He was a deacon for many years at Victory! Christian Canter (Shookstown Assemblies of God), and superintendent of Sunday school. He assisted in the construction of the present church building.

He was a founding member of the Francis Scott Key Antique Car Club, in which he won awards for his restored 1940 Chevrolet. He loved riding and training horses, and belonged to the Bar A Horse Club, where he received many ribbons and awards.

He enjoyed watching his twin granddaughters' piano and dance recitals. He enjoyed going to church hymn sings, watching Bill Gaither videos, old John Wayne westerns and war movies, and enjoyed anything Irish. He always had a smile to share and a joke to tell.

Visitation will take place from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Victory! Christian Center (Shookstown Assemblies of God), 7722 Edgewood Church Rd. in Frederick (21702), where funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, with the Rev. Dr. Michael Garland officiating.

Following the church service, there will be a procession to Resthaven Memorial Gardens for interment with naval honors. Please omit flowers.
