Maria Piceno is remembered as a beautiful, bright, loving child. She enjoyed school very much and was a good student. She was 8 years old and a student at PW Engvall School, in Lemoore, at the time of her death.
She disappeared while on an errand to a local grocery store to buy a can of tuna. Her body was discovered floating in Poso Creek, near Wasco, CA, some 60 miles south of her home in Lemoore. Her kidnapper and killer, a petty officer in the United States Navy, Gene McCurdy, awaits execution at San Quentin Prison.
Maria was survived by her parents, Jorge Piceno and Arcelia Ferrel, and siblings. Additionally, an entire community came together to embrace Maria's family during the terrible time after the child's disappearance and we wept together at Maria's death. She will never, ever be forgotten.
