James was a son of Roger Kingsley Story & Lucy Beeman.

He was married on 28 Sep 1860 to Mary Harriet Harris.

James was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted with his brother, Corp. Aaron H. Story, on 31 Oct 1861 at Presque Isle, Maine as a Private in Company "C", 15th Regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry and went with the regiment to New Orleans, Pensacola, Florida and Texas. He re-enlisted January 24, 1864 and was present at General Bank's Red River Campaign; also at the fight at Monacacy Bridge. He was discharged in 1866. He was promoted to 1st Lt and to acting Quartermaster AAC under order from General Gilmore. The malaria he contracted while in service, troubled him off and on for the rest of his life.

James & Harriet had 7 children: Carrie Lunette "Nettie" Story, married Melvin A. Greenleaf; Flora E. "Foddie" Story, married John F. Stairs and Sprague A. Taylor; Harriet M. Story, married George W. Fitzpatrick and Frank H. Hammond; Reuben H. Story, married Sarah Jane "Sadie" Curtis; Owen Kingsley Story, married Mary Louise Anderson and Ethel M. Perkins; John A. Story, married Ada Ellen Thompson and Minnie E. English; and Delbert Monroe Story, married Daisy E. Murphy.
