GUSTAVUS FREEDOM WALKER
Gustavus volunteered service in the Civil War, and mustered into Company "H" of the Maine 20th Volunteer Infantry on August 29, 1862 at the age of 19. The 20th Maine Infantry, with Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain in command, is most noted for their engagement in the Gettysburg campaign on July 1-3, 1863; and they were instrumental in holding off the Confederate Army during the defense of Little Round Top on July 2nd...a pivotal battle at Gettysburg. Gustavus was wounded in the knee during the Gettysburg action on July 2nd. He was again wounded at Petersburg VA in 1864, and was held prisoner at one point during the Battle of the Wilderness.

His tentmate during the Civil War was a nearby Hodgdon, Maine neighbor and good friend Mansfield W. Hamm.

His Civil War service lasted until he was discharged from service near Washington, D.C. on June 4, 1865. He subsequently studied medicine after the war at Boston University and at Vermont Medical College and was a physician in Boston, MA beginning in 1888. He was a member of the John A. Andrew GAR Post #15 in the Boston area.
