Gregory H. Chinn went to meet his Lord on Monday, July 13, 1998. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Gail Brunner Chinn; one son, Taylor Jameson "T.J."; his stepdaughter Gretchen Weaver; his parents, Vernon and Rose Cook Chinn; his sister and brother-in-law, Patti and Miles Ferguson; his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Lisa Chinn; two nieces and one nephew.

Greg was born Oct. 8, 1957. He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1976, attended Wilmington College and the University of Kentucky on a full football scholarship. People around the community may remember Greg from WPAY radio station, and for his work with the men at Good Shepherd Manor where he served as their physical education director. He also worked for three years in Findlay, Ohio, with the clients of Blanchard Valley Industries (MRDD). Upon returning to the Portsmouth area, he worked with his father-in-law at Beaumont Electric Supply and then operated his own businesses, including Custom Steele Builders.

His passions were four: his family, sports, the arts, and most importantly, his Lord Jesus Christ. He performed in several plays at the Portsmouth Little Theater, directed one, won several local awards and one regional award from the Ohio Community Theatre Association. He also performed in fundraiser productions for the Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center.

Besides having played football for the University of Kentucky, he was involved in coaching at Grant Middle School and Notre Dame High School in Portsmouth, Ohio and Liberty-Benton High School in Findlay. You will also see his name in the Portsmouth High School Hall of Fame and his track record for shot put and discus still stands.

As a member of the Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene, Greg would often speak at churches and youth gatherings about his testimony and love for the Lord. Greg battled leukemia for 10 years and continually inspired his family and friends with his ever present faith, humor, optimism and determination. He leaves a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.

Friends may call at F.C. Daehler Mortuary in Portsmouth from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The funeral and celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Portsmouth First Church of the Nazarene, Third and Brown Streets, Portsmouth. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
