Thomas Kendall Swope, D.O., 79, of Portsmouth, died Tuesday August 30, 2011 at St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington, West Virginia.

He was born June 3, 1932 in Portsmouth, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Bethel Swope, and his father and 2nd mother, Thomas Covert Swope and Amajean Jenkins Swope.

Dr. Swope was a pre-med graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, and a graduate of Kirkville College of Medicine, Kirkville, Missouri. He served his internship at Grandview Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He opened his office in West Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1959, and semi-retired in 2005. He had been a part-time physician at the Scioto Cancer Center and the Adams County Cancer Center.

In his youth, Tom won the Portsmouth Soap Box Derby and came in second place in the national race in Akron, Ohio.

Tom was a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church and its chancel choir and adult handbell choir. He was also a member of St. Anne/St. Andrews Visitation Team; Aurora Lodge #48, Valley of Cincinnati Scottish Rite, York Rite; Scioto County Habitat for Humanity and the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra. He was a member of the Ohio Osteopathic Association in Columbus; Columbus Academy of Osteopathic Medicine and American Osteopathic Association, and the Shawnee State Golden Bears.

Tom is survived by his wife, Esther O. Speck Swope; a sister, Alice Ellen Pakurar of Richmond Virginia; a niece, Kerri Pakurar of Charleston, S.C., and two nephews, Eric Pakurar of New York City and Tom Pakurar, Jr. of Richmond, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church with the Reverend Clark Hess and the Reverend Kym James officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at F.C. Daehler Mortuary Company in Portsmouth and one hour before the service at the church. A Masonic funeral will be held 8 p.m. Thursday at Daehlers.
