Jose Garcia, 10, was playing on the tracks when he was struck Thursday in Planada, near Merced, said Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Joe Lara.
The boy was hitting a stick against a freight train going 10 mph and didn't see the second train coming in the opposite direction at 65 mph.
"It's a tragedy," Planada Elementary Principal Daniel Chavez said. "Because I live in this community, I see these kids all the time. Needless to say, it's difficult."
