TRENTON: Truck-train crash kills driver; 2nd collision reported
Thomas Harper, 43, of Detroit was killed Tuesday morning when the semi truck he was driving was struck by a southbound train at about 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of Vreeland Road and Fort Street. It was one of two train-vehicle crashes in the city in the span of an hour.A second crash occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on Toledo Road, near Hoover. In that accident, the cab of a gravel hauler was separated from its trailer and rolled over, trapping the driver inside. He was taken to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center, where he was being treated Tuesday night.Harper's semi caught fire when it was struck at the Vreeland crossing. The truck was dragged about a quarter-mile down the tracks, said Deputy Police Chief Rob Smith.Harper is the second person to die at that crossing this year; a woman was killed March 2 when her car crossed in front of a train at the same spot. The Vreeland crossing does not have a gate, but witnesses said the lights and bells were activated at the time of the accident, Smith said. The Toledo Street crossing has a stop sign only, Smith said. Both accidents remain under investigation.
