Jan. 9, 1935 New Rochelle Westchester County New York, USA
Sep. 2, 2005 Winston-Salem Forsyth County North Carolina, USA
Actor. He was best remembered for his role of 'Gilligan' in the television show "Gilligan's Island" (1964 to 1967) and in the role of 'Maynard G. Krebs' in the television show "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" (1959 to 1963). Born in New Rochelle, New York, he attempted several careers, first as a mailman for the US Postal Service, then as a high school teacher. He was exempt from military service, as he had suffered a broken neck in 1956, when he was twenty-one. He was attending college at Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles when he first got into acting. His first role was a bit part, a character named MacIntosh in the film, "A Private's Affair" (1959). He was then picked up for the character of a bearded beatnik named Maynard G. Krebs, as a wacky foil against his college classmate and fellow actor, Dwayne Hickman, in the television series "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis." This show went on for four seasons, and when it ended, he was offered his best remembered role of Gilligan. "Gilligan's Island" has been seen for many years on the rerun circuit. After "Gilligan's Island" ended in 1967, he tried several other shows, including the role of Dusty in "Dusty's Trail" (1973) and several Broadway plays. He would reprise his role of Gilligan in several sequels, usually presented as two-hour made-for-television movie specials, including "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" (1978), "The Castaways on Gilligan's Island" (1979), and "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" (1981). Contrary to his inept and goofy acting persona, he was really a very talented, serious, shy, and well read person. He was married four times, and had four children with three of his wives. His longest and most successful marriage was to Dreama Peery, who Bob married in 1976 and she remained at his side until his death. In May 2005, he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery. He died in Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, North Carolina, from complications from the treatment for cancer. (bio by: Kit and Morgan Benson)
