Samuel, born 17 Aug 1793, in Somerset, Vermont, was the oldest of two sons of Asa & Elizabeth (Carr) Pettengill. At the age of 19 he went to Williamstown, Berkshire County, Mass., where he became acquainted with Miss Sarah Ann Baldwin. He took her back to Vermont where they married, October 25, 1812, and returned to Williamstown. Their union was blessed with 14 children. They lived in various localities and finally moved to Michigan where their youngest was born. Samuel died January 16, 1887, in Swartz Creek, Michigan, at the home of his daughter, at the age of 93 years and 6 months.
