The Cool family moved from Cattaraugus County, New York, about 1861. They homesteaded the NW corner of Elms and Carpenter Road, in Flushing, Michigan. Amsy had two children by his first wife. She died and Amsy married Betsy Pettengill and nine more children were born. Amsy was interested in race horses. In 1878 two of his stallions got into a fight and he was injured in a knee, which developed blood poisoning. Dr. Rulison treated him and told him the leg had to be amputated. Amsy refused saying, "When that leg goes, I'll go with it." He died in a few days. This information comes from notes from Edwin C. Bills, their great-grandson.
