Charles was the 4th of six children born to Daniel & Amerilla (Jones) Pettengill.

He enlisted as a Private with the Union Army on Feb 22, 1864, at the age of 20. He was with the 4th Michigan Calvary and was in Companies E and K and died Aug 1, 1864.

Charles shares a tombstone in the Flushing Cemetery, with his brother, Daniel, who was also in the 4th Michigan Calvary, and who died Jan 1, 1865. (top photo to the right).


He is actually buried in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and his name is given as Charles W. Pettingill, as being in the 4th Michigan Calvary, Company E, and buried in Plot F, #1999. (Second photo on the right.)
