He explored up the Saguenay, St. Lawrence and Richelieu rivers, collecting information to make very accurate maps of Canada from Hudson Bay in the north down to the Great Lakes. He made a trip to North America in 1604, exploring the Atlantic coast from the Bay of Fundy down to Cape Cod, in search of a permanent location for a French settlement. On his third trip in 1608, he founded a settlement and trading post along the St. Lawrence River. The post became the city of Quebec. It was the first permanent white settlement in Canada and makes Quebec the oldest city in Canada. For the rest of his life, he traveled between France and Canada, exploring and mapping North America.
