U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, relocated to Kentucky and practiced law in Irvine, Estill County. Entering politics, he was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives (1855-56). Moving to Minnesota in 1860, he served as a Major in the Union Army as a judge advocate in the Minnesota Volunteers, during the Civil War. After the he settled in Arkansas, resumed the practice of law and was active in organizing the Republican Party of Arkansas. Upon the readmission of the State of Arkansas to representation, he was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate, serving (1868-73). After leaving the Senate, moved to Colorado in 1875, then to Oklahoma and continued the practice of law until his death.
