His great-great grandparents, Daniel McDuffie and Sarah McNeill McDuffie, emigrated from Scotland and settled in North Carolina. The family later moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where Archibald went to school. He became a schoolteacher and taught in Georgia and Mississippi. He married Virginia Carolina Hobday in DeSoto County, MS on 03 April 1845. Archie, as he was known to family and friends, served as a private in Co. E, 4th Louisiana Cavalry, Confederate States of America during the War of the Rebellion. He moved his family to Texas following the Civil War and was one of the early post-war settlers of Waxahachie in Ellis County.
