She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on August 10, 1919, the only child of Lily Martin Moore and Sam Moore who preceded her in death when she was very young. She was raised by her grandmother, Harriet Martin and a devoted aunt, Viola. She attended public schools in Little Rock, and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1938. She furthered her education by attending Dunbar Junior College. In Little Rock she met Samuel Walton and they were joined in marriage. They were blessed with two children, Samuel Louis and Angela Yvette.
She worked for 35 years for the Fort Smith Public School System, having been an eyewitness to the growth and development of black children in Fort Smith, working as a secretary to the principal of the three elementary schools for black children in the city. Washington, Dunbar, and Howard Schools. Her tenure saw the integration of Public School system, and the evolution of the segregated system to an integrated school system.
She also took an interest in her community, having served as a volunteer for the Retired Volunteers Seniors Program (RSVP), as well as the Almerican Association of Retired Persons. For the past several years, she has also served on the board of the Fort Smith Historical Society.
