He was a jailer at Independence, Missouri and was killed in a gun battle during a jail break. A prisoner named Joab Perry, a former Confederate guerilla, was broken out of the Jackson County jail by five of his former associates. Some accounts suggest the James gang may have been involved, although the identity of the raiders was not positively established. Deputy Bugler is memorialized on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC at Panel 4, E-18.
