Augustine Montague Gildea was born in Dewitt County, Texas April 23, 1854. The story goes he ran away from home at the age of ten to join the Confederate Army, but was declined. He was working as a cowboy by the age of twelve. He was a Texas Ranger in Companies D and F and was involved in several fights with Indians. He served as a peace officer at several border points including deputy sheriff at Del Rio, Texas. After his lawman days he worked as a cowboy and range guard for John Chisum in New Mexico. During the Lincoln County War, Gildea joined up with the notorious outlaw gang Selman’s Scouts. Governor Lew Wallace wanted Gildea for suspicion of at least four murders. The outlaw made his way to Arizona where he worked as a cowboy on a ranch near tombstone. He died of natural causes at Douglas, Arizona on August 10, 1935.

Gus later found himself in Lincoln, after the war, and became a member of Selman’s Scouts—a group of rustlers who terrorized Lincoln County. He later moved back to Arizona, married, had four daughters, and died of natural causes.
