Louis H. Balot III, 49, of Plum Borough, died Saturday, April 6, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Cynthia; the father of Lauren and Meghan; the son of Louis (Bernadette) H. Balot Jr. and Hilda (Hartman) Ennis; the brother of Michael (Elyce) Balot, Rene (Yoko) Balot and Angela (Edward) Wallace. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was a Lieutenant Commander with more than 30 years of service to the Navy. He was a member of American Legion Post 980, past Chaplin, volunteered for Plum music booster and enjoyed watching Penguin games. Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at SOXMAN FUNERAL HOMES LTD., Roth Chapel, 7450 Saltsburg Road (At Universal Road), Penn Hills. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Januarius Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meghan's Educational Fund c/o Soxman Funeral Home. Interment will be in National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

For Navy Lt. Cmdr. Louis Henry Balot III, his priorities were always clear — family, fleet and community. The Plum resident died Saturday, April 6, 2013, after a four-month battle with cancer. He had just turned 50. Lt. Cmdr. Balot served on active duty in the Navy for 30 years, the past 10 in Pittsburgh, where he worked with local corporations that design and manufacture naval propulsion equipment. Despite the many long hours he worked, Lt. Cmdr. Balot always made time for his wife and children, his family said. Beginning in 1983, he served aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and the USS Shenandoah. In 1991, he transferred to a shore base, working as a master training specialist. "Those who knew Lt. Cmdr. Balot would attest that we lost a great friend and family man, Pennsylvania lost a tremendous citizen and the U.S. Navy lost a true shipmate," said his friend, retired Cmdr. Alan Staude of Brentwood. Community participation was especially important to him. He was a volunteer emergency medical technician and served as post chaplain for American Legion Post 980 in Plum. As a member of the Plum High School Marching Band and Music Boosters, Lt. Cmdr. Balot would drive the high school band equipment to shows and competitions. Even after his daughters were out of high school, he took the time to drive the equipment to a competition in Orlando, Fla. "That's the kind of guy he was," Staude said. His wife, Cynthia, remembers her husband as a devoted father and outgoing friend to everyone. "He knew everybody," she said. "That's how we'd like to remember him." Lt. Cmdr. Balot worked with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, volunteering to answer phones during the annual Labor Day Telethon. In addition to his wife, Cynthia, he is survived by two daughters, Lauren, 22, and Meghan, 19.
