James was the youngest of seven children born to Sarah Rodda and John Eva. In December 1893 he married Theresa Nicholson at Bootle, Cumberland, England. The couple had two sons: John and James. On February 20, 1895, he emigrated from Liverpool, England aboard the Adriatic, and the ship arrived at Ellis Island on March 2, 1895. He worked as a farmer.
