Jacob was the second of ten children. He was a farmer. He married Ellen Doretta Roth at the German Lutheran Church in Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on August 26, 1876. The couple had 14 children: Clarence, Flora, Emma, Ezra, Elsie, Louise, Anna, Ella, Charles, Blanche, Agnes, and three infants who died shortly after birth.
