Jacob was the eighth of thirteen children, and the second son. On July 27, 1817, he was baptized at the Union Church in Hamilton Township, and his Sponsors were Johannes and Kattraut Muller. He married Elizabeth Hay on April 14, 1839, and the ceremony was performed by Rev. Joseph P. Gross. The couple had eight children: Addison, John, Emeline, Theodore, Sarah Ann, Catherine Jane, Mary Elizabeth, and Hannah. He was a farmer.
