Civil War Union Soldier. He enrolled in the 3rd New Jersey Militia on April 23, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company C on April 27, 1861. He served with his unit his it first manned the defenses of Washington, DC, then as it participated in the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, where it was held in reserve. He was honorably mustered out on July 31, 1861. The nect day, August 1, 1861, he was enrolled in the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry, and was mustered in as a Private in Company D on August 14, 1861. Transferred to Company D, he served with his unit for the next 4 years in the field, seeing the war through to it's conclusion. Promoted to Corporal on June 1, 1865, he was honorably mustered out on July 24, 1865.
