On June 17, 1951, Gil was married to Marilyn J. (Head) at Parke Memorial Church. He was an Army veteran stationed at Fort Meade, MD and worked in Washington, DC. In 1965; Gil joined St. Paul's United Church of Christ on West Michigan Street, where he taught Sunday school and was the President of the Congregation. He was a 50 year member of Reed Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite and was also a past member and President of the West Side Kiwanis Club.
Gil is proceeded in death by his parents; brother, Oliver Smith of Texas; sister, Delores Stokes of California; and sister, Fern Dennis of Tennessee.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn J. (Head) Smith; sons, Timothy M. Smith and Dr. David B. Smith and wife Sarah R. Smith; grandsons, Zachary W. Smith and Luke A. Smith, all of Evansville; 2 nieces and 2 nephews.
Gil loved his family very much, especially his grandsons. A special joy for him was his dog, Kringle. Before he became ill he enjoyed working in the yard and his flower gardens, dining out and playing cards with his friends.
