The estimated birthdate of Rachel 1736 is actually the estimated birth date of Joshua's first wife Hannah unknown who may have died during or shortly after their arrival. Rachel's estimated birthdate is about 1751 her first child with Joshua Pettit was born in 1767 and the place of her birth is unknown.

Joshua Pettit moved his young family from Elizabethtown New Jersey after the French-Indian War when the roads along the Ohio River began to open. He travelled with a group of other settlers by Ox & Wagon on the Great Philadelphia Road. Early Pioneers walked along the trail next to their wagons & livestock while they were traveling even during bad weather conditions. They faced the possibility of being attacked by Indians or acquiring diseases like cholera along the way.. and there was always the risk they could become severely Ill and even die while on the trail.

Rachel Monroe was the second wife of Joshua Pettit, they married in Virginia before 1767-- NO record of the marriage in Virginia has been found

Joshua Pettit's son Henry Pettit Sr. kept part of his father's records in his family bible, it recorded the children of Hannah and children of Rachel with Joshua Pettit.

The name Monroe was found on a dowry release on a land deed of Joshua Pettit by Hembree researchers, possibly a Monroe relative signed the document as witness ....this is why Hembree researchers consider her last name Monroe ....

Joshua Pettit married Rachel in Virginia 1766, There was a Monroe family living in South Branch that had a connection to the Ashbrook family. Joshua Pettit was named the administrator the estate of the late John Ashbrook who died in 1763 to collect outstanding debts

John Ashbrook's brother was Levi Ashbrook a Judge for the Hampshire County town court. James Monroe was a lawyer, in a court record he was ordered to examine the estate and the settlement and administration account of Thomas Combs deceased in 1797 the husband of Susannah Pettit.

John Chenoweth & Mary Calvert were Quakers from Burlington New Jersey and settled on the border of Maryland & Virginia near Frederick County Virginia. One of their daughters Ruth married John Pettit who I believe to could be a relative of Susannah Pettit .. John Pettit is mentioned in John Chenoweth's will " it is my will that the deeds of gift already made & given to my son Thomas Chenoweth & John Petit my son-in-law of my land "…In the Will his last name is spelled Pettit but Chenoweth researchers believe his name to be Poteet, of which I believe to be incorrect.

Levi Ashbrook's farm was on the Cacapon River between the towns of Winchester & Romney in the Shenandoah Valley. He served as minister for the North River Baptist Church near Romney in Hampshire County WV. He married Mary the daughter of his neighbour John Chenoweth Jr. and wife Mary Smith.

Monroe Creek on the Cacapon River and nearby Monroe County WV were named after President James Monroe of Virginia

In 1758 a Monroe family settled on Potluck Run about thirteen miles from present day Romney WV. Rev. Alexander Monroe lived on Cacapon River and m. Elizabeth Chenoweth, they moved to Indiana prior to his death was a minister for 50 years. Rev John Monroe a brother established Capon Baptist Church in Hampshire County WV. Three miles south on Christian Church Road is a private cemetery were Dr. James Monroe b. 1785 and his wife are buried.

Joshua Pettit-- records indicate that he knew Probate Law and was a land investor, surveyor and knew how to write out land deeds, owned a couple mills and must have been a merchant & slave owner. He first came to the South Carolina back country with Richard Pearis before 1773 and returned for his family leaving Virginia between 1773-1774. In South Carolina he was a large land holder. His homestead with a grist Mill was located at Grendal Shoals on the Pacolet River. He owned an Iron Works known as Briarwood that his daughter Hannah Hembree inherited with 1200 acres of land and also owned a Lumber Mill on Lawson's Fork Creek on the Pacolet River that his son Joshua Pettit Jr. inherited. Wofford's Fort was constructed on Lawson's Fort Creek. Joshua Pettit supplied the lumber for Wofford's Fort that was located in present day Glendale. John Hembree was one of the carpenters who helped with the construction of Wollford's Fort, John Hembree was the uncle of his-son- in law Joel Hembree. Note; the Embry's/Hembree's ancestors were tobacco planters who came from England in the 1600's to Virginia Colony---There Native American ancestry is likely from the Placage system that was prevalent during early colonization. Joel Hembree's descendants DNA results show Native American ancestry.

The Pettit Family Bible has a record with children Joshua had with Hannah unknown & Rachel Monroe. The family record was not in good condition and difficult to interpret but I speculate that this would have been this order…

The late Bob Hembree believed that some of the children on the census for Joel Hembree husband of Hannah Pettit were the children of Joshua Pettit who had died leaving minor children. He had some doubt that Rachel was a Hembree, her birth date is estimated close in age to her birthdate in the Pettit Family bible. Rachels birth name Pettit and her being the wife of Johnson Hembree (Embry) would explain the Embry graves in the Pettit Cemetery. ---
