OPAL MARY MILLER was born near Kendrick, Lincoln County, Oklahoma, the second of three daughters, born to Philip Otis and Coy Jane (Earp) Miller. Her older sister died at the age of 3 years, when Opal was only a year old.
Her parents farmed the land on which they lived, and her father was a Churches of God preacher, often riding horseback between the small churches he served to preach the gospel. He became ill, and the family left Oklahoma and moved to Sulphur Springs, Arkansas, hoping that the mineral waters there would be beneficial to his failing health. Opal and her younger sister, attended school in Sulphur Springs for one term before their father died on March 5, 1925. His widow and two small daughters accompanied the body of their husband and father on the train back home to Oklahoma. They buried him there in the Stroud Cemetery.
Opal married Lewis Anderson on May 16, 1926, at the age of 15 years, and their marriage spanned over half a century, terminated by Lewis' death in 1989. In 1933, they moved to Chandler; and shortly thereafter, built their home. Under the foundation of one of its corners, they buried an empty, metal can which contained a small Bible, thus expressing their covenant with God that their home would be built on His Word and its principles. In a day when marriages are temporary and families are transitory, this house they built became the "family home" for 60 years. Here they raised their children, and it was here that those children, their families, and friends, returned time after time, holiday after holiday, always assured of acceptance and a warm and loving welcome. Opal remained in the home after Lewis' death until 1996 when her own failing health made it impossible for her to remain there any longer. Opal was a talented seamstress and worked for many years in downtown businesses in Chandler in alterations and floral offerings. But always, she was the homemaker of her family's home, and this was her most valuable contribution to the lives of those she loved.
Lewis and Opal were the parents of three daughters: (1) Lueta Ruth Anderson Kellerby, 1927-2005, (2) Janie Sue Anderson Anderson, born in 1943, and (3) Doris Ann Anderson Farrell, born in 1946.
