His tombstone identifies him as A.M. Bryant. He was known as Alec or Alex and his nickname was Chick.

As the story was told to me, some of the family and neighbors moved on from Kentucky to Missouri. The ones who stayed in Kentucky would occasionally load up and head to Missouri to stay for a few months. My great-grandfather was one who liked to get up early, eat and get moving. Apparently he was often the first one up for the day. He was having trouble getting the others to wake up as early as he wanted, so he crowed like a rooster to get them fully awake. That's when they started calling him "Chick." It's a nickname that stayed with him his whole life. Some of his children even have the name Chick Bryant entered on their death certificates.

He married Nancy Elder. They had 13 children. In order of birth: Mary Elizabeth, Charles Thomas, Joe Cephus, William Asa, Dorinda Ann, Lona Belle, Louettrice, Robert Blaine, Viola, Elzia Newton, Vona Ellen, Susie May, and Harlin James.
